Teaching
Kids to Eat Healthy – As Easy as Recognizing the Colors of the Rainbow!
Teaching
your children to eat healthy doesn’t have to be the dreaded task like
most fear it to be. If you can teach your children colors, you can
teach them about eating healthy using the same concept. Take your
children to the grocery store with you as you are teaching them to
recognize healthy food by color. If they feel they’re involved with the
selection, they’ll like to show what they’re learning and are more
likely to pick up healthier eating habits. Here are a few colors and
some of the foods associated with them to begin teaching your children
with:
- Red: Red fruits and vegetables like
tomatoes, strawberries and watermelon are full of lycopene and
anthocyanins. Lycopene is important to prevent lung and prostate cancer
and anthocyanins are considered to help fight certain cancers and
diabetes.
- Orange: Orange vegetables like yams, pumpkins
and carrots are rich with alpha and beta-carotene which are important
in the prevention of cancer.
- Yellow: Yellow vegetables
like squash and yellow peppers are high in Vitamin A. Vitamin A is
important in keeping your immune system healthy.
- Blue: Blue fruits like blueberries and concord
grapes contain Resveratol which is important for maintaining good heart
health
- Green:
Green veggies like spinach, kale and broccoli may be a little more
difficult to convince your kiddos to eat, but it’s important that they
do so as they are rich in lutein and flavanols. Lutein protects us
against heart disease as well as protecting the eyes from cataracts
while flavanols give the heart an overall health boost.
- Purple:
Eggplants, plums and blackberries are full of anthocyanins. If you
remember, these are important to help fight certain cancers and
diabetes.
By using this color method, you will be
exposing your children to different fruits and vegetables that are
important to their overall health and teaching them at a young age will
help them develop a love for these different foods on into adulthood.
Traveling
While Expecting
Taking
a holiday while you are pregnant is not only still possible, but it is
actually a terrific idea, particularly if it is your first pregnancy.
After all, it is likely to be quite some time before you’ll get another
chance to lie on the beach and truly relax once baby has arrived!
There
are, of course, things you need to take into consideration prior to
setting off, however, especially if you intend to fly. In most cases,
it is safe to fly while pregnant, with the second trimester - the
fourteenth to twenty-seventh weeks - being the easiest, as you will
have higher energy levels and morning sickness will no longer be a
problem.
If you have any medical issues during your
pregnancy,
such as the likes of spotting, a previous early birth, high blood
pressure or diabetes, however, you should always check with
your doctor first before making any flight plans.
