child care and development in Stockbridge, Georgia

Are you a praise-aholic parent? Beware, new research shows the wrong praise can decrease kid self-esteem, motivation, effort, and achievement. How to use praise the "right way."

"Atta girl!" "Super, sweetie!" "Good job!" "You're sooo smart!"  Sound familiar? All you have to do is attend any kid sporting event - hockey game, volleyball, soccer, football, swim meet-and you'll get my drift. Parents are there to support their kids-and "Yay!" that they are - but the accolades and praising for any effort is so predictable.

Don't get me wrong, there's no harm in giving kids praise every now and then - just as long as you recognize our words are not always beneficial in improving their behavior, motivation or self-esteem. In fact, too much praise of any sort can be unhealthy, and several recent studies from prestigious institutions reveal that the wrong kind of praise can backfire and even impede our kids' progress. In this article, we will explore those important studies..as well as look at the most beneficial ways to acknowledge our kids....Read more to learn ...

Manners for Babies & Toddlers
by Julie Tilsner

Your 1-year-old loves to sit at the table with you. But she also loves to fling her food and shriek. You:

A. Feed him in the kitchen, with a tarp on         the floor. Switch off with your spouse so
you each get ten minutes to eat.
B.Teach him how to use a fork and
remove him from the table if he yells.
C.Feed him first, but then let him join you.

 (Answer: C )

It's never too early to start socializing your baby. And even though you wouldn't expect a younger child to sit still for long, what you want to show him is that eating together can be a (mostly) pleasant experience.

Of course, to keep it more agreeable for the rest of you, take the edge off by giving him dinner first. Then when you're ready to eat, let him sit at the table with a snack so he can watch how the rest of the family interacts at mealtime.

IS IT CONTAGIOUS?

Our responsibility is to help our families stay healthy and informed.  So, what do you do if there is an outbreak of pinkeye? Or if you have questions about a play date with a child recovering from an ear infection?

KidsHealth.org has a new Free app that can help our parents.  It is available now for Apple and Android devices - provides instant, reliable information and images on 85+ infections and other conditions kids and teens get.

The content of this app has been reviewed by the pediatricians of KidsHealth.org and the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, this tool quickly gives parents the answers they need, starting with: "Is It Contagious?"

Should You Put Your Kid on a Diet?

By Nancy Gottesman

Starting to think you should put your child on a good old-fashioned diet? Stop. We've got a much better idea for changing the whole family's diet.

Indeed, doctors warn against dieting in the old-school, low-cal, low-fat sense of the word. Depriving children, even heavy ones, of nutrients and calories hinders their development, doesn't work long-term, and puts kids at higher risk for eating disorders. Then there's the singled-out factor: Kids who get small portions or different foods feel excluded.

What should you do?

Brave Barrington Mom

Hat's off to Rhonda Ramsey, mother of Riley in Ms. Wanda's class.  This weekend, she took a step that we dare say not many would commit to taking... she had all of her hair shaved off to raise awareness and funding for childhood cancer research.

St. Baldrick's volunteers raised more than $30 million in 2012 by shaving heads and raising funds in bold new ways. This year's record-setting fundraising efforts allow the foundation to mark a milestone-$100 million in childhood cancer research grants since 2005.

Way to go Rhonda!
We salute you!
