child care and development in Stockbridge, Georgia
The Value of Social Development
by Ms. Tamika Akins

As parents we are always striving to provide the best for our children and childcare is a very important choice for parents. When looking to enroll children in childcare many parents focus on the curriculum, which is expected. As we look for the different traits we recognize as good quality, we should not forget the value of social development. Children may find it easy or difficult to grasp the concept of writing, reading, adding, or subtracting; but, the social aspects come naturally. The value of social development gives individuals the ability to communicate their wants or needs, interact with others well, strengthen their vocabulary, and more. As parents, we tend to overlook how valuable social development is. Whether teaching or learning, the key components for transferring information from one person to another comes from the value of social development.

Join the Imagination Library and Receive Free Books for Your Child!

The Vision:

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new literacy effort, The Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly's vision was to foster a love of reading among her county's preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family's income.

Making A Difference:

The Imagination Library became so popular that in the year 2000 Dolly announced that she would make the program available for replication to any community that was willing to partner with her to support it locally. Since the initial program launch in the United States, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has gone from just a few dozen books to nearly 40,000,000 books mailed to children in the United States, into Canada and across the proverbial pond into the United Kingdom! Currently over 1600 local communities provide the Imagination Library to almost 700,000 children each and every month. Already statistics and independent reports have shown that The Imagination Library drastically improves early childhood literacy for children enrolled in the program. Further studies have shown improved scores during early literacy testing.

What is President's Day About Anyway?

Presidents' Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called "Washington's Birthday" by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22-Washington's actual day of birth-the holiday became popularly known as Presidents' Day after it was moved as part of 1971's Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation's workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents' Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.
